They can ignore evidence that denies their beliefs and use evidence for their beliefs so they can appear to seem intelligent, even if the former is more plentiful.
This short story also paving the way for the multiverse theory also is interesting as one could look at that as a way we browse the internet and experience media, we do not usually see media as one long timeline (unless specified to be so) but as their own individual timelines disconnected to each other.
